Post-16 learning



We have put together a series of workshops ranging from 1 hour sessions, to whole day or even residential two day sessions. We have intentionally targeted areas of the AS/A2 curricula that students struggle with and are using hands on activities and the unique facilities of Dartmoor Zoo to enrich the delivery of these topics for your students.


DZP AS/A2 Biology Weekend Course – Environmental Science Residential

Key topics covered:

Sampling, population estimates, mark-release-recapture, transects, quadrats, statistics (standard error, standard deviation, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, Chi Squared), microscope image size calculations, the use of keys for identification.

Learning Objectives:

- to gain hands on experience with sampling techniques for animals and plants

- to use primary data that the students collect in statistical techniques appropriate to each specification

- to use lab and field based strategies for studying populations, behaviour and biodiversity.

- use graticules to measure microscopic images and calculate the size of magnification.

Whole Day Workshop - DZP Enterprise Challenge

Key topics covered:

Conservation, team work, finances, enclosure design, BIAZA, CITIES, stud books, business, media and presentation skills.

Learning Objectives

-to explore the history of zoos and important legislations (for examples CITES)

-to design appropriate animal enclosures

- evaluate the animal welfare and enrichment needs for successful captive breeding

Our Enterprise Challenge is unique, challenging, award winning and lots of fun, pitting teams of up to six students against each other in a tough, real-world task to select a new species to add to the DZP collection, design the enclosure and present their plan to senior zoo staff.

Your students will have to work together tackling all the real life struggles that we face at DZP in our mission to help conserve endangered species and maintain an exciting collection that will engage and thrill the general public.

We will provide the students with all of the background information and resources, then it's down to them!

At the end of the challenge, each team will present their design and strategy to a panel of DZP senior staff, Dragon's Den style.

Half Day Workshop - Animal Genetics and Inheritance

Key topics covered:

Monohybrid crosses, dihybrid crosses, sex linkage, Phenotypes and Genotypes

Learning Objectives:

- to gain real life examples of mutations and crosses.

- to actively develop understanding of genetic crosses and calculations of allele probabilities

- to explain the importance of genetics on the role of the zoo.

1 hour workshops

Animal Learning and Behaviour

Key topics covered:

Operant conditioning, classical conditioning, stimuli, conservation, taxis and kinesis

Learning Objectives

- students will explore operant and classical conditioning using examples within the zoo.

- students will investigate the important practical implications of implementing conditioning within a zoo.

- students will evaluate the use of conditioning as a means of improving conservation


Animal Welfare, Enrichment and Training

Key topics covered:

5 freedoms, enrichment, natural behaviour, training, health and husbandry

Learning Objectives

-          Students will explore how we maintain the highest level of husbandry to our animals.

-          Students will design, make and give enrichment to some of the zoos animals to help them maintain their wild behaviour traits.

-          Session will end with exploring the importance of animal training for health checks and be given the opportunity to watch how we complete our training.


Captive Breeding in Zoos

Key topics covered:

Biodiversity, conservation, IVF, Artificial, studbooks, genetic diversity

Learning Objectives

- study the importance of maintaining genetic diversity in conserving species.

- Students will explore the reasons behind the use of studbooks and the legislations behind breeding captive animals.

- highlight examples of Artificial Insemination and In Vitro Fertilisation in breeding programs
