Primary Outreach

Here at Dartmoor Zoo we offer a range of Outreach sessions designed to collectively cater for the needs of any group. These sessions are perfectly tailored for the young explorer, where the beauty of the natural world is brought into the comfort of your classroom!

Close Encounters

In this fully interactive, ‘hands on’ session we bring the zoo to you! Close Encounters allows children to get up close to some of the less furry animals at DZP while also learning about the lifestyle and habitats of a range of different species. We offer a variety of interactive workshops and our themes include:

Sense-ations; Here the students are encouraged to use their sense of touch and hearing to help develop their knowledge in a creative way with the help of our catalogue of sensory items.

Adaptations; Our Adaptations session gives an early insight into the world of animal evolution as pupils come face to face with our weird and wonderful collection of critters.

Animal Habitats; Take a closer look at the places our animals call home in our Habitat session as we meet a group of animals from all over the globe.

Classification; Discover what makes an animal a mammal, reptile or insect in this interactive session where our scaly friends help us put animals into groups.

Teeth and Diets; Learn to tell how if an animal is a carnivore, omnivore or herbivore by examining examples of animal teeth and discover how we can group animals based on their diets.

Endangered Animals; Here we help our animal friends tackle the challenges of conservation to uncover what Zoos - and individuals - can do to help wildlife all around the world.

Whilst our themes allow for a great deal of variation if required, we are also able to cater to the specific needs of individual groups.

Animals in the Close Encounters display may vary depending on feed cycles and your distance from the zoo, but may include:

Blue Tongued Skink, Corn Snake, Milk Snake, Bearded Dragon, Hog-nosed Snake, Orange Headed Cockroaches OR Giant African Land Snails.

Secondary Outreach

Boredom Busting and Training Tigers!

Captive management of animals is about more than just feeding and cleaning. While teaching a bear to ride a bicycle is a thing of the past, animal training is still a huge part of the modern zoo! In this workshop we look at the different ways we train our animals, and why, before getting to have a go at training your classmates! We will also explore enrichment in enclosures, problem solve some behavioral issues in a zoo environment and test your thumbs out with some real enrichment devices!

The Sustainability Enterprise Challenge

Young environmentalists are put to the test with a brand new Enterprise Challenge. Battling against the clock, students have just one and a half hours to create a ‘sustainability campaign’ for a chosen charity, before pitching their ideas to a panel of judges in the hopes of winning a grant. This two hour challenge will test the students across a range of subjects, with Key Stage 3, 4 & 5 curriculum links in Science, English, Business, Maths, Enterprise and Geography.
