Animal Department Volunteer Placement Positions

We are excited to announce we have 2 full-time practical placements available:

17th September 2018 – 14th December 2018

1st October 2018 – 29th March 2019

We are looking for enthusiastic, hard-working and reliable individuals. The volunteer placements are ideally suited to someone who has recently completed an animal management course and is looking to gain experience for future career progression. The placements would also be suitable for degree students considering a ‘sandwich’ year. The minimum age is 18 years. You will assist the keepers with all of their daily duties, working with a wide range of mammal and bird species. This will range from general animal husbandry – feeding, cleaning, food preparation, enrichment – to interacting with visitors and assisting in ‘experiences’. You will work alongside the keepers, and in time, be trained to complete certain tasks independently.

You will require previous animal based volunteering experience, good communication skills and will need to be physically fit due to the nature of the role.

These positions are unpaid and will include some weekend work. The successful applicants will be working 8am – 5pm, 5 days a week. Dartmoor Zoo is unable to pay travel expenses or offer any accommodation. Due to the isolated location, your own transport is desirable.

Placement Volunteers will receive in-house training, complimentary drink and lunch, as well as other discounts, and a full reference.

Please send a CV and cover letter to or Miss Hannah Webb, Dartmoor Zoological Park, Sparkwell, Plympton, PL7 5RZ.

Closing date: Midday on Friday 22nd June 2018.
