Here at Dartmoor Zoo, we regularly welcome a range of SEND and alternative provision settings. We offer standard ratios of 1 free adult for every 3 students across all key stages for SEND groups. To ensure your visit is as smooth as possible we also make allowances for 1:1 and 1:2 provision so please highlight the number of students who require this on the booking form below if applicable.
Please note that to qualify for our heavily discounted education rates, you must prebook with a member of our education team and receive a confirmation email.

Recommended workshops
Through experience, our education team have identified the workshops that are most engaging for SEN and alternative provision students and provided a SEND recommended workshops PDF. A more extensive list of the workshops Dartmoor Zoo offers can be found on our School Groups page, but if you would like to book one of these sessions please contact the education team beforehand to talk about your preferred session so we can tailor it as best we can to suit the group’s needs.
Our inclusive, active workshops provide cross-curricular opportunities and are designed to enrich children’s learning experiences. Created in line with National Curriculum objectives, they can support your classroom teaching, launch your topic or simply provide a fun day out! When booking, please let us know your group’s learning level and objective so we can tailor your visit to meet your learning needs as much as possible.
Our workshops generally last for 45 minutes, although this can be flexible to suit your students, and can accommodate a maximum of 30 students.
Education Pass for Alternative Providers
Here at Dartmoor Zoo, we understand that learning does not need to be confined to the classroom walls and that for some students an outdoor learning environment can support their engagement. We have 10 years experience working directly with alternative providers and have won awards for the programmes we have developed. We are pleased to now offer our new Alternative Provider Education Pass.
With our education pass, you will have a unique opportunity to visit our site with unlimited student admission during term time*. Whether you have one student who needs to escape into nature, or a group of students who want to learn more about the natural world, our education pass has the flexibility for you to do this. Whatever your students needs, our education pass provides an opportunity to tailor and enrich students’ experiences and diversify their learning opportunities away from the normal classroom environment.

Dartmoor Zoo’s Social Story
At Dartmoor Zoo we understand that going to a new place and meeting unfamiliar people can be overwhelming for some young people. To help them feel a little more comfortable about coming along for a visit, we have created our Social Story to outline what they can expect. This resource provides a whirlwind tour of Dartmoor Zoo including arrival, meeting our education team, some of our residents and our teaching spaces.
