Keeper for a Day – £199 (Two for One!)

You’ll be working alongside our expert zoo keeping team caring for a wide variety of species. You’ll learn about animal diet and nutrition, husbandry and our comprehensive training and enrichment programmes that keep our animals healthy and happy. This is a very hands-on experience so be prepared for a bit of hard work and dress appropriately. But don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of time to take some memorable photos.

This Experience is only available to those aged 16 years old or more.

Please be advised that this experience does not include any involvement in our big cat or carnivore section. To work with those animals, you need to buy our Big Cat Keeper for the Day Experience.

NEW Junior Keeper for a Day – £199 (Two for One!)

A day for the younger enthusiasts working alongside our keepers with a variety of species. You’ll take part in feeding selected animals and cleaning their enclosures as well as creating some fun enrichment. This is less demanding then the adult keeper package, runs from 10:00-15:00 and is more suitable for 8-15 year olds.

You’ll clean and feed either the coati or raccoon, plus make enrichment for the meerkat, raccoon dog, coati or vervet monkey – it’s your choice.

As well as feeding the otters and having a private Close Encounter session with our reptiles and amphibians, you can choose whether you’d like to meet the wolves, red fox or raccoon!

*Please note that the itinerary is subject to change, depending on animal welfare, weather patterns and staffing on the day. Your keeper will inform you of any changes to the itinerary during your Induction. A parent/guardian will also need to be present throughout the experience.

Big Cat Keeper for a Day – £449 (Two for One!)

– A full-on day as a Big Cat zoo keeper –

This is an intense, hard work, hands on, all day experience, starting at 8am. You’ll be working with our expert big cat team caring for the widest variety of big cats in the south west of England. You’ll learn all about the different characters, their history at the zoo as well as the fine balance of the feeding routine and training that is so important to keeping big cats healthy and happy. Not for the fainthearted, this is an amazing experience that will live with you forever.

Minimum age is 18 years old.

After an introductory briefing you will have the amazing experience of feeding our meerkats as well as the opportunity to ask staff any questions you may have.  You will have the opportunity to learn about these beautiful creatures.

The encounter will last approximately 20 minutes and the price includes Zoo admission for the participant.  Please note that at no stage do you you go in to the enclosure with the meerkats.  This is a session which takes place outside their enclosure and gives you the opportunity to learn about them from our keeper, feed them and photograph them.  Available to anyone aged 6+. Complimentary drink given.

Reptile and Bug Experience – £40 for a group of up to 4

Enjoy a hands on Reptile and Bug experience at DZP as you learn how to care for these animals.  Be prepared to get your hands dirty as you experience a fun and educational workshop.

You’ll be behind the scenes having a view of what is involved with looking after reptiles and bugs.  Perfect for children aged 6 and above.  A parent or guardian must be present in the group of up to 4.

The experience lasts for approximately 30 minutes

Meet Hayley Bear – £129 for 2 people

This is a unique experience and will last around 30 minutes.  During that time you’ll go behind the scenes and meet our keepers. There will be photo opportunities aplenty before she is shut away so that you can go in to her enclosure to provide food and enrichment.

This experience is only available April to September and places are strictly limited. There is a fixed start time of 3pm and the minimum age for this is 18 years old.  The price includes free access to the Zoo for the whole day.

Have you ever wanted to meet a real wolf and howl like a wolf?

After a short briefing you will be taken to the enclosure fence by one of our wolf handlers to meet our North American timber wolves.  You will discover some interesting facts about the wolves and learn about their different howls.  You will have the opportunity to take photographs at the fence and may even experience the wonderful sound of the wolves howling.  

The experience lasts around 40 minutes and can accommodate individuals or groups of up to six people.  The price includes entry to the Zoo.

The VIP ‘We Bought a Zoo’ Tour – £495 (For Two People)

In 2007 Director, Benjamin Mee committed the story of Dartmoor Zoo to writing in the best-selling book, “We Bought a Zoo.” It has since sold all over the world in over 20 languages.

In 2009, this fascinating story came to the attention of Hollywood producers and in 2010, the movie of the same name starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson was released in the USA and later in the UK in March 2012.

The screen adaptation was crafted for an American audience and set in sunny California but despite the change of location, the Oscar-winning writer/director Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous) remained true to the spirit of the original story.

Since that time, Benjamin Mee has become a popular choice as a public speaker, sharing his unique story with a variety of audiences around the world.

Now you can hear this fascinating story as well as all the highs and lows of keeping Dartmoor Zoo alive over the past ten years first hand from Benjamin himself in a guided VIP tour of the zoo.

DZP Rangers – £150 (OR £275 for 2)

The ‘DZP Rangers’ is a fully interactive, three day workshop that will have kids thrilled with animal encounters and activities designed to engage, educate and entertain. Open to children aged 6-12 and available during all the school holidays, DZP Rangers provides parents with a fascinating, fun and educational alternative to childcare. Led by fully qualified teachers and teaching assistants the three-day workshops will keep the kids busy and entertained from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Running from Monday to Friday, Rangers Academy is a full week packed with practical activities, lectures and animal encounters; giving you a range of exciting new skills (perfect for adding to your CV)! The maximum intake for each course is 12 students, ensuring a much more personal experience, giving you the chance to get up close and hands on with some of the species in our collection.

Meet some of the most popular characters, big and small, of Dartmoor Zoo.  From the noisy otters and nosey coati to our gentle raccoon, you will then be given a choice of your final visit.  You could meet Chincha our stunning jaguar or Tibo & Baro our beautiful twin cheetah with attitude.  This fun and varied experience will last an hour and is for 2 people.  the price also includes free access to the Zoo for the whole day.

There is a fixed start time of 3pm and a minimum age of 8 years old.

This unique experience is for 2 people and will last around 30 minutes.  During that time you’ll enter the lynx house, meet our keepers and get to know the real Flaviu and his partner Willow.

There will be plenty of photo opportunities and a chance to ask all your burning questions.

There is a fixed start time of 4pm in summer and 3.30pm in winter and a minimum age of 8 years old.  The price also includes free access to the Zoo for the whole day for the participants..

Tiger Rock

Meet the tigers – £149 for 2 people

This unique experience is for individuals or groups of up to six people. The entire experience lasts for around 20-30 mins. During that time you’ll meet one of our keepers and get up-close and personal with the tigers behind the scenes for an encounter you’ll never forget. Price also includes free access to the rest of the zoo and a free lunch in our Jaguar restaurant.

Demand is high and places are strictly limited, so you’re advised to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Available to those aged 8 years old or more.

Cancellations

  • If you wish to cancel a confirmed Experience, please do so in writing at least five (5) working days prior to your Experience date. A refund will be paid minus a £20 administration fee.
  • Cancellations under five (5) working days’ notice from the Experience date will be charged in full and no refund will be issued.

Amendments

  • Experience date amendments under 5 working days’ notice from the Experience date will be charged an administration fee of £20.
  • Experiences bought via outside parties (eg Virgin) have their own refund/cancellation policies over which Dartmoor Zoo has no control.
  • All Experiences are booked on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • Your Experience involves working environments. On rare occasions unforeseen circumstances may necessitate postponement of your Experience at short notice. In this event you will be contacted via email or phone as soon as possible. We recommend that you check your messages and emails regularly before your visit in case we have contacted you.
  • Minimum age limits are as flows: Meet the Tigers 8+ , Keeper for a Day 16+ and Big Cat Keeper for a Day 18+.
  • Junior Keeper for a Day has a minimum age of 8 years old. A guardian must be present throughout the Experience.
  • Full admission price must be paid for any guests not booked on to the Experience.
