We’re delighted to announce that Chana and Erro, our Brazilian tapirs, are now proud parents!
On the morning of Wednesday 5th August, Chana gave birth to a beautiful, healthy calf, marking a truly special moment for our zoo.
This is an incredible conservation achievement. In the last 12 months, only 15 Brazilian Tapir calves have been born in zoos worldwide, and just one has been born in the UK. As a Vulnerable species, every birth is a vital step towards securing the future of these remarkable animals, making this an exciting milestone for Dartmoor Zoo.
If you’re visiting the zoo, we’d love your help in giving our new family the best possible start. Please be patient and keep noise to a minimum as you pass the tapir habitat, allowing Chana and her calf to settle in peacefully. Thank you for helping us provide a calm environment during these precious first days.
If you want to be in for a chance of meeting mum and baby, we’re giving five lucky winners the opportunity to enjoy an exclusive Tapir Experience, and one of those winners will even get to name the calf! To enter, simply donate to our CrowdFunder. Every donation gives you the chance to win while helping fund the care, research, and conservation of this incredible species.
